Before It Breaks captures that second entirely by hand in oil. A great wave rises at the centre of the canvas, its deep navy body curved into a flawless arc, its crest exploding upward in thick, sculptural foam — pigment applied so generously it seems to still be in motion. Above, a sky of soft cerulean and cloud. Below, the churning white of spent water spreading across the shore.

The canvas is wide and panoramic — built for the long wall, the room that needs a horizon. Hung above a sofa or along a corridor, it does not so much decorate a space as open it outward, toward sea air and open water and the particular freedom that only the ocean offers.
